The area
Following the brown sign from Trecastle to the Usk Reservoir/Cronfa Ddwr Wysg, and in about 2 miles you arrive at St Mary’s Church, Traeanglas. This picturesque rural Church is situated on the banks of the river Hydfer river, with the vicarage and School room near by.
The church
The foundation stone was laid in 1888, plans designed by J.B Fowler and built by John Anthony, under the supervision of Mr. Rhys Davies of Brecon.
On entering the Church you have a peaceful, light feeling, partly due to the quite large windows of unstained glass. Moving through the Nave you will notice two Plaques on the south wall dedicated to William and Gwladys Howells and family of Pantglas. Before taking the step up to the Chancel your eyes are drawn to the beautiful stained glass East Window, and colourful glazed tiles behind the Alter, which gives an uplifting feeling. There is a small Vestry leading from the Chancel.
In 1955 to mark her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visit to the area, a mill stone was placed in the Graveyard on which a flag staff was erected. The Mill Stone was found on the hill – Fan Brycheiniog by Rev Jones-Davies, and with the help of Mr. Ivor Pugh brought it to the Graveyard. It was at this time Her Majesty opened the Usk Reservoir.
In 1966 Concrete paths were laid by the members, and in 1975 a large investment was made, with the re-roofing of the Church with Welsh Slates.
The Vicarage was built some 5 years after the church, and this was followed by a 2 story building – stabling on the ground floor and a school room above. The School room became the Centre of the Community, where Sunday school was regularly held, also Concerts, Whist Drives, Swper Calan Gaeaf, Christmas Parties and Meetings.
A small committed group of Members and Friends meet here for service which is held on the 1st Sunday of each month at 9.30am, where a very warm welcome awaits you.
