The area
Merthyr Cynog is a hilltop hamlet in the tranquil Yscir valley. Situated on the edge of Mynydd Epynt, the surrounding countryside consists mainly of family farms and isolated dwellings.
The church
St Cynog’s church enjoys an elevated position in the heart of Merthyr Cynog.
This handsome, large church has the purported distinction of being the burial place of St Cynog, son of Brychan, who built a settlement here around 500AD.
The striking square tower may be Norman in origin. The nave likely dates from the 12thC or 13thC.
The imposing rood screen is 14thC.
Ancient Yews stand sentinel in the churchyard, witnesses to centuries of history at this beguiling place.
Special events include very popular Harvest, Christmas and Easter services.
