The area
Llansantffraed is a spread-out community to the north east of the River Usk opposite Talybont-on-Usk. There is a small hamlet near the church, which also serves the villages of Scethrog and Talybont-on-Usk.
The church
The church was completely rebuilt in 1885 although it retains some elegant 17th and 18th century monuments. It is a Victorian architectural gem. It also has a fine acoustic for concerts. Due to its relatively isolated location, the church is kept locked, but access can be arranged via the churchwarden – see below. Henry Vaughan heritage
Breconshire’s renowned 17th century poet and physician, Henry Vaughan, was born and lived nearby. He lies buried in a peaceful location under a yew tree in the churchyard, well signposted from the churchyard gate. There are information boards about Henry Vaughan in the church porch and at his grave. An annual memorial service is held in late April to commemorate Henry Vaughan on the anniversary of his death. Concerts and other events
The Church Committee and the local community holds a range of special events at the church throughout the year, including concerts and literary events usually in association with other organisations – such as the Brecknock Society or the Gwent Chamber Orchestra. These are advertised in the local media and on this website’s News Posts.
